Cross-Whitehall Lessons Event makes its debut
The first Cross-Whitehall Conflict and Stabilisation Lessons Event took place on Tuesday 9 November at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
The event brought together colleagues from across the Whitehall conflict lessons community and included representatives from the three parent Departments of the Stabilisation Unit (Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Department for International Development and Ministry of Defence), other Government Departments and the military.
Introducing the event, Permanent Under-Secretary, Simon Fraser emphasised the importance of “Working together, in an integrated way, to tackle threats, to build stability and security…The way we need to combine together our defence work, our diplomatic work, our development work behind the common purpose and this is what the Unit [Stabilisation Unit] and this event represents.”
The integrated approach was itself the focus of the presentations. Lou Perrotta, Head of the SU Lessons Team, acknowledged that “what we mean by the integrated approach is an evolving concept – but it is clearly about working together – earlier, better and smarter” using examples of integrated HMG planning for Yemen and Somalia to illustrate HMG’s progress so far.
