Getting the best people for the job - new competency framework for the civilian experts we deploy
The 1,000 strong Civilian Stabilisation Group (CSG) is one of the Stabilisation Unit’s unique capabilities and making sure we find the right people to deploy is crucial. As part of this, we’ve refreshed our Competency Framework so that it better reflects the work we do.
The new framework has been developed after interviews with those we’ve already deployed so that we have a better understanding of precisely what behaviours our people need to display in order to perform effectively when working in the field.
The framework has six key competencies against which our civilian experts will be measured and assessed as part of interviews or when taking part in training opportunities. These competencies include behaviours such as self reliance, leadership and effective decision making.
The new Competency Framework and an explanatory user guide can be found at:

This work further emphasises a lesson the Stabilisation Unit has learnt in all of our deployments – that being able to behave effectively in challenging situations is as important as having the right technical skills. We need deployees to be excellent technical experts, but also be flexible, maintain a sense of perspective, be pragmatic and build good working relationships.
