One year on - helping the UK meet UN resolution to improve the lives of women in conflict zones

altToday marks the 11th Anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, on Women, Peace and Security.

Last year, the UK Government updated its national action plan to ensure that gender issues are at the heart of its work in conflict-affected countries. One year on from the launch of that plan, the Stabilisation Unit is reporting to the Associate Parliamentary Group (APG) on Women, Peace and Security on how it has been contributing to this UK Government effort.

Today the Unit will outline how it is working to meet UN resolution 1325 through:

• Using the knowledge and experience of those we’ve deployed to capture lessons and case studies from the field on how best to incorporate gender into stabilisation operations to help inform and improve future policy and practice.

• Recruiting and working with gender experts in countries such as Afghanistan, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo to ensure that women’s needs and ambitions are a key consideration in stabilisation operations.

• Training core staff, members of the Civilian Stabilisation Group, other Government staff and the military so that they understand how and why taking a gender perspective is fundamental to peace, security and development processes and how it can improve stabilisation outcomes.

The annual review on the UK Government’s progress towards the National Action Plan can be found on the FCO website.
